Controlled Substances & Precursor Testing | Health Canada Licensed Lab
Canadian Analytical Laboratories offers Health Canada-licensed testing of controlled substances and Precursor Class A materials including opioids and psychedelics.
Comprehensive Controlled Substances Testing
Controlled substances are critical in modern medicine and research, including their use in pain management, mental health treatment, and scientific development of new therapies. However, due to their potential for misuse and diversion, stringent regulatory controls are enforced in Canada.
CAL provides analytical testing services for controlled substances including:
- Active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) assays
- Impurity profiling and residual analysis
- Potency testing and quantification
We are licensed and equipped to handle and test a variety of controlled substances, such as:
- Opioids (e.g., codeine, morphine, fentanyl)
- Stimulants (e.g., amphetamine, methylphenidate)
- Benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, lorazepam)
Precursor Class A Substance Analysis
CAL is also licensed to test and analyze Precursor Class A substances, which are regulated due to their potential use in the illicit synthesis of controlled substances. These compounds are commonly used in cold, cough, and decongestant medications, but are tightly controlled under the Precursor Control Regulations (CDSA).
We test the following Precursor Class A substances:
- Ephedrine and ephedrine hydrochloride
- Pseudoephedrine
- Phenyl-2-propanone (P2P)
- Norephedrine

CAL is also licensed to handle Psilocybin and Psilocin the potent psychoactive molecules in certain mushrooms.
